Misal Pav | Spice White Peas Gravy | Indian Street Food Recipes

December 30, 2012 by Siri

Misal Pav is a famous Indian Street Food especially in the state of Maharastra..One thing that you should never miss is the street side food when you visit Mumbai..Misal Pav is one such tasty and spicy chat item that is cooked with white peas and served with warm bread toasted in butter..Each bite of the toasted bread dipped in this spicy misal gives you a heavenly experience..

Before I proceed for the Misal Pav Recipe, thanks a lot to Meenu from Random Ramblings for posing such an interesting challenge to South Team..Ahh..wondering what this challenge is about??Divya from You Too Can Cook Indian Food is hosting a wonderful event called South Vs North Challenge..an interesting event where two teams challenge each other with their innovative recipes every month..This month Sherin(Kuk’s Kitchen) from South Team posed Medu Vada challenge to North team and Meena from North team came up with Misal Pav challenge for South team members..Join SNC club to learn new recipes and lot more!!

Okay now off to the recipe of Misal Pav:

Preparation time – under 40 min
Serves – 3 to 4

Ingredients:

  1. Dried White Peas – 1 cup
  2. Onion chopped – 2
  3. Tomatoes – 3 big(I used cherry tomatoes)
  4. Green chillies slit – 3
  5. Ginger chopped – 1 inch
  6. Garlic – 2 pods
  7. Oil – 4 tbsp
  8. Red chilli powder – 1 tbsp
  9. Cumin Seeds – 1tbsp
  10. Coriander powder – 1 tbsp
  11. Amchur Powder(Dried Mango Powder) – 1 tbsp
  12. Garam Masala – 1 tbsp
  13. Kasuri Methi(Dried Fenugreek) – 2 tbsp(optional)
  14. Salt to taste
For assembling:
  1. Home Made Pav Buns(click here for recipe)
  2. Butter – 1 tbsp
  3. Sev – 5 tbsp
  4. Finely chopped onions – 3 tbsp
  5. Lemon slices

Step by step recipe for Misal Pav:

Soak dried white peas over night or for 7 hours in plenty of water.Drain the water and pressure cook them by adding 2 cups of water until 3 whistles. Preserve the cooked water for recipe.
Start chopping onions, green chillies and tomatoes.

Heat 2 tbsp of oil in a heavy bottomed pan.Add in onions and chillies and saute till they turn pink.Sprinkle some turmeric and add in ginger and garlic.Cook for at least 7 mins.

When onions gets cooked add in tomatoes and cook till soft.Throw in all the spice powders and adjust salt.

Allow the cooked mixture to come to room temperature.Blend it into smooth paste along with some cooked green peas.Adding few peas to the mixture gives the curry a creamy texture,

In the used pan, again add another 2 tbsp of oil and crackle cumin seeds.Add in the onion tomato puree and stir well .Cook for atleast 3 minutes.

Now add in the water that you have (when pressure cooked the peas) and cook for 5 more minutes.Throw in all the spice powders and boiled peas.

Mix well and cook it covered for at least 10 – 15 minutes. At last before 5 minutes of switching off the flame, add in kasuri methi powder.

Spicy Misal Pav is ready now to serve with fluffly and buttery buns..
Toast the buns lightly with a tsp of butter.Take a plate and put the buns.Sprinkle some sev and drizzle some lemon juice and chopped onions…Just dig in to the plate for a spicy experience:)

That’s my Amma posing for me:)

NOTES

  1. Toasting the buns in butter is optional.
  2. Add a dollop of butter just before serving the misal.
  3. Sprinkle sev only just before serving else they become soggy.
  4. Adjust spice powders according to your spicy level.
  5. You can serve this misal with pani puris and chapatis too.
  6. Try not skipping amchur powder and kasuri methi as those both will give a tickling taste to this yummy chat.
Hope you enjoyed this post as much I did..Thanks a lot to Meenu for this spicy challenge!!
