Onion Chutney | Ulli Chutney | Ullipaya Pachadi| Hotel Style

December 23, 2012 by Siri

Wonder what is that rust colour chutney that your street side food stall vendor gives you along with hot piping idlis when you buy a plate for 10 rupees? That’s the most wanted and finger licking onion chutney which is very easy to prepare at home.Onion chutney is also called Ulli Pachadi in telugu..This chutney will be very sour and tangy at the same time and can be evenly spread across your piece of dosa or idly..
Prepare this yummy onion chutney can break your boredom of having the same coconut ot groundnut chutney for your regular breakfast..It is a total hit in my family and I had to prepare an extra batch of idlis for the sake of licking this chutney πŸ™‚

Try out this Ulli chutney and let me know the shower of praises that you got from your sweet family:)

Cooking time – 30 min
Serves – 3

Ingredients:
  • Onions -3
  • Tomato -1
  • Green chilli-4
  • Dried red chilli -2
  • Cumin seeds – 1 tbsp
  • Coriander powder – 1/2 tbsp
  • Pepper powder-1/4 tbsp
  • Oil- 2tbsp
Tempering:
  • Oil – 1 tbsp
  • Hing- a pinch
  • Mustard- 1 tbsp
  • Curry leaves – 1 spring
  • Dried red chilli -2
  • Cumin seeds – 1/2 tbsp
Method:
1.Take all your ingredients.Start chopping the onions into slices, slit green chillies and cube tomatoes.

2.Heat 2 tbsp of oil in a pan and start sauting red chillies and green chillies for a minutes.Add the sliced onions and sprinkle some salt and turmeric powder.

3.Cook the onions for at least 12 minutes(which I didn’t do) and add in tomatoes. When they turn soft add in coriander powder, pepper powder.Cook tile they turn mashy.

4.Take it into a blender and add some cumin seeds, garlic pods and mix it into a coarse chutney.Adjust salt if required while grinding.

5.Make tempering with the ingredients mentioned and pour hot on the chutney.
NOTES:
  1. Please saute the onions till very soft else the chutney will give you raw smell.(I did this mistake)
  2. Try to make this chutney in little required quantities as it tends to change its colour with time which we may not like it.
A perfect chutney for your breakfast items is ready now to lick with:)Go on gals..get back to me with your feedback and questions soon..
