Instant Oats Idli | Oats & Broken Wheat Rava Idli | Breakfast Recipes

January 7, 2013 by Siri

Idly/Idli is a staple breakfast for South Indians, yes I agree its famous all over India:) Oats is now a days gaining popularity even in smalls towns having people known about the wonderful nutritional and fibre values of it.Why am I talking about two total different kinds food now?Okay your kids doesn’t like oats porridge and your husband hates oats and a kind of traditional breakfast eater? So how about mixing some oats batter for a different kind of idlis this weekend?

When I was googling for oats idli recipe I found this wonderful detailed recipe on Sharmis Passions, the next day I made these healthy and fibre rich goodies.!!The usage of broken wheat rava makes the batter a little thicker than the traditional idly batter, but you can break the boredom for sure!

Serves – 2

Total preparation time – 30 min

Ingredients:

  1. Oats – 1 cip(I used Quaker Oats)
  2. Broken wheat rava – 1/2 cup
  3. Oil – 2 tbsp
  4. Grated carrot-1
  5. Curd – 1 cup
  6. Mustard seeds- 1/2 tbsp
  7. Split channa dal -1/2 tbsp
  8. Cumin -1/2 tbsp
  9. Salt to taste
  10. Cashews for garnishing
  11. Water as required

Method:

Line up all your ingredients.Start dry roasting the broken wheat on low flame for 2 minutes.Keep this aside.

Heat oil in a pan and crackle cumin seeds, mustard seeds and split channa dal.Add the grated carrot and saute for 5 minutes until the raw smell goes off.Keep this aside.

In the same pan start dry roasting oats for 3 to 4 minutes.Allow them to cool down and make it into fine powder in a mixer.

Take the powdered oats, broken wheat rawa and curd into a mixing bowl.Adjust water, salt and make it into a batter consistency.Add the grated carrot and mix well.

Now the idli batter is ready,If you wish you can mix some baking powder. But I dont like to add it.Grease idli plate with some oil and pour a ladle in each partition.Put a cashew nut on each idli.Steam it for 20 minutes until the idlies are done!

Usually this oats idli will take longer time to get cooked than the normal idli.So please be patient to enjoy this healthy and fibre rich breakfast:) Serve it hot with some podi or coconut chutney..We enjoyed it with home made Tomato Thokku..Click below for the yummy pickle

Tomato Thokku/Instant tomato Pickle

NOTES:

  • Please beat the batter well soon after adding the curd as it helps making idlies soft.
  • The batter will start getting thicken within in less time so keep adjusting water for further use.
  • Addition of ghee in the batter will give you tasty idlies.
  • You can include as many vegetables you want

I hope you have enjoyed this post and have a look at my stuffed idli too.
