Multi Purpose Curry Powder | Home Made Curry Powder

March 18, 2013 by Siri

Curry-Powder (2)Indian Curries are famous all over the world. There is something aromatic about curries which make them taste unique. Also curries take less oil when compared to deep fries which makes us an healthier option. But to couple with fresh vegetables we need something aromatic to form a base for the curry or gravy. There are many brands of curry powders that are available in the market and each one of it taste unique in its own way. I often get confused with different tastes and one bright afternoon I decided to make my own. This homemade curry powder turned out so aromatic and gave me a fresh feeling while cooking my gravy. Also this can be made in huge batches and stored in air tight jars for a longer shelf life. My home made curry powder is less spicy and you will not have any garam masala or hot spices in it there by it can used in the daily cooking for your family. Also I call this multi-purpose curry powder since I successfully used this in vegetables gravies, rasams and even in sambar. It also tasted great with idlis and dosas with just a dollop of ghee but it tastes good just as such with rice even. It is very easy to prepare and not even takes 30 mins.Anything that is home made is always great. Isn’t it?
Curry-Powder
Makes 100 gms;Takes 20 min
INGREDIENTS:

  1. Split Bengal gram/Pachi Sanaga Pappu – 4 tbsp
  2. White uradh dal/Minapappu – 4 tbsp
  3. Groundnuts – 4 tbsp
  4. White sesame seeds- 4tbsp(I have not used this time)
  5. Coriander seeds – 4tbsp
  6. Jeera/Cumin seeds – 3 tbsp
  7. Methi/Fenugreek seeds –¼ tbsp.
  8. Dried Red chillies – 10

METHOD:

  • Home-made-curry-powder-recipeTake a wide pan and heat it on high flame for a minute and then reduce the flame to medium.
  • Add in all the ingredients above and roast until nice aroma spreads around.Keep sauting them to avoid burning.Fry till they turn golden brown or little red.
  • Allow them to cool down and grind into fine powder as shown in the picture
  • I made a tasty brinjal pulusu using this curry powder and it was just delicious. Planning to use this in all my stir fries tooJ Try it out and let me know.Homemade-Curry-Powder

I made a tasty brinjal pulusu using this curry powder and it was just delicious. Planning to use this in all my stir fries too J Try it out and let me know the end result.

 MY NOTES
  • Using sesme seeds also give an excellent taste to the curries but since I had it separately I didn’t use this time to make curry powder.
  • If you are slightly on the spicier side add 4-5 cloves to get that extra touch.
