Rava Upma | Rava Kichadi | Semolina Upma

March 23, 2013 by Siri

Rava Kichadi is a famous Indian breakfast served in almost all marriage functions. It is simple to prepare and easy to eat πŸ™‚ It is also known as sooji rawa upma..this brings back my childhood memories where we used to make lot of fuss to eat this upma. But it has become my favorite after tasting it in my college hostel mess:) Hot and warm rava kichadi blended with lightly roasted vegetables just melts in your mouth. Each and every spoon is filled with melting goodness and tastes heavenly with some coconut chutney or as it is even.Along with some vegetables I also used fresh sweet corn to make the kichadi a bit interesting.Lets look into the detailed recipe for making rawa kichadi today.

Makes 3 serves;Takes 30 min
INGREDIENTS:
  1. Semolina/Sooji/Upma rawa – 2 cups
  2. Mixed Vegetables – 5 tbsp
  3. Cashew nuts β€“ 10
  4. Tomatoes chopped – 1 big
  5. Curry Leaves – 1 spring
  6. Coriander leaves chipped – 2 tbsp
  7. Split bengal gram – 1 tbsp
  8. Mustard seeds = 1/2 tbsp
  9. Cumin – 1/4 tbsp
  10. Grated ginger – 1/2 tbsp
  11. Green chilli chopped – 2
  12. Ghee/Oil – 3 tbsp

METHOD:
Take a pan and dry roast the rava or semolina for five to seven min without getting it burnt.Heat little oil or ghee and roast the cashews.Take them into a plate and keep aside.Crackle cumin, mustard seeds and Bengal gram, Add in the grated ginger, curry leaves and chopped green chillis.Saute them on low flame until nice aroma spreads.

Add in the vegetables and roast for 5 min.Add the tomatoes too and cook for 10 min by adjusting the salt. Add 4 cups of water and bring it to boil slowly. Once the water boils enough adjust salt one more time. Slowly add in the semolina by stirring continuously without allowing forming lumps. Cook it covered for 10 min stirring in between.Sprinkle coriander leaves and serve hot!

MY NOTES
  • Add a tbsp of ghee once you switch off the flame as it gives extra nice flavor to kichadi.
  • You can use this in any dosas as a filling and also in savory sandwiches.

Check out the Andhra pesarattu here, you can use this for making Upma Pesarattu.

Hot bowl of rawa kichadi is ready to taste!!
