Sorakaya Palu Posina Kura | Spiced up Bottle Gourd Curry in Milk | Lauki Ka Subzi

March 25, 2013 by Siri

Sorakaya Palu posina Kura- Andhra Style
Bottle Gourd also known as calabash is a very low in fat and high in dietary fibre and it contains almost 95%percent of water. Since its water content is high it is obviously a cooling agent to our bodies. It is known to be a good natural medicine for curing urinary disorders and also a comforting food for those who suffer from constipation frequently. People who want to shed weight can include a big portion of this vegetable in their daily diet to keep the stomach filling with fewer calories. Also it is rich in iron and vitamin c and b complex. Today am showing you a simple curry using this wonderful vegetable by giving a little twist with fresh creamy milk. It is widely called as Sorakaya Palu posina Kura in our home state Andhra Pradesh. It is very easy to prepare and can be served with rice and any kinds of breads or chapathi or roti.
Andhra Sorakaya Palu Posin Kura

Andhra Sorakaya Palu Posin Kura

Makes 3 serves; Takes 45 min
INGREDIENTS:Bottle Gourd – 1 medium
Onion – 1 big
Milk – 1 cup
Green chillies – 4
Coriander Leaves – 2 springs
Oil – 2 tbsp
Dried red chillies – 2
Split bengal gram – 1 tbsp
Mustard seeds – 1/2 tbsp
Crushed garlic – 5 pods
Turmeric – 1 /2 tbsp
Salt to taste
METHOD FOR SORAKAYA PALU POSINA KURA:
Chop onions and slit green chillies. Peel the bottle gourd and cut it into small chunks. Make sure you cut them small else they won’t get cooked properly. Heat oil in a wide pan and crackle mustard, Bengal gram and dried red chillies. Add green chillies and garlic pods too. Sauté for a minute and add onions.

Sorakaya-Kura

Add salt and turmeric and cook till the onions turn little soft. You don’t need to fry the onions till they turn brown or crispy. Add in the chopped bottle gourd and mix well such that the tempering and salt gets coated well to them. Cook it covered for 5 to 10 min until the vegetable starts oozing out water.
Sorakaya-Kura
Continue to cook till the bottle gourd is coked fully by adjusting salt. It would take a solid 30 min for this on low flame. Once the curry is cooked add the milk and mix well. Just cook for another 4-5 min exactly and switch off the flame else the milk may start curdling. Sprinkle coriander leaves and serve hot with any rice or rotis. It taste great for hot rice!
Sorakaya-Kura
So simple and quick. Isn’t it??

MY NOTES
Remember not to add any chili powder as it will not taste great when milk is added. It is better to use green chillies alone instead of chilli powder.
Also milk might reduce the spiciness of green chillies so add an extra chilli according to your spice levels.
Pick up a tender bottle gourd in the market. You can test it by pressing with your nail gently.
