Roasted Channa Dal Chutney |Senagapappu Kobbari Pachadi | Chutney for Idly/Dosa

April 9, 2013 by Siri

Chutneys are an integral part of Indian Breakfast. Each variety has its own taste and rich aroma. Soft idlys and crispy dosas are not worth eating without spicy chutneys. Making the same chutney every time makes our breakfast a boring one. We often make chutney with groundnuts for Idly or Dosa but this one is a typical variety with roasted channa dal. This senaga chutney is mainly served in the small road side hotels which will give a very different taste to your idly and dosa. You can make this chutney using both green chillies and dried red chillies. However I liked the green chilli flavour than that of the red chilli one. Also the addition of milk takes off the spiciness of chillies and give a balanced flavour. Try this chutney and let me know how you like..

Makes 3 serves; Takes 20 min
INGREDIENTS:
  1. Roasted Channa Dal-100gms
  2. Dried Red Chillies– 10
  3. Milk – 1 /2cup
  4. Green chillies – 4
  5. Fresh cocnute grated – 5 tbsp

For tempering:
  1. Oil – 2 tbsp
  2. Mustard seeds-1/2 tbsp
  3. Split channa dal- ½ tbsp
  4. Cumin seeds– 1/2 tbsp
  5. Grounded garlic – 2 pods
  6. Curry Leaves-1 spring
METHOD:

  • Dry roast Red chillies and keep aside.Dry roast the channa dal for 1 min,Allow them to cool and take them to blender.Add milk, grated coconut and grind coarsely to form a chutney by adjusting little amount of water.
  • Heat oil and make tempering with the ingredients mentioned.Pour on the chutney and serve with hot piping idlies or crispy dosas. It tastes good with upma or kichadi too.
Replace with green chillies for a different taste!

MY NOTES
  • Adjust milk according to your spice taste as it makes the chutney milder. If you need a bit spicier replace the milk with more water.
  • Use dried coconut if fresh one is not available.
