Palak Broccoli Dal | Palakura Pappu | Lentils with Spinach and Broccoli

June 12, 2013 by Siri

Who all hate Broccoli? Most of them have a very hard corner for broccoli. Am not an exception but only until my friend made me to taste this wonderful vegetable. Despite of knowing the health benefits of broccoli, never stepped forward to buy this wonder vegetable. We can call it a zero calorie vegetable and belongs to cabbage family. It is also considered as cancer fighting vegetable and rich in vitamin C and fibres. If you wish not to eat it as a whole florets you could actually grab this idea from me..I used broccoli in palak dal where in you won’t even find any traces of its existence but goodness filled in disguise.Palak and broccoli makes an amazing combination and am sure you would love this fusion taste.I don’t I need to explain you guys about the benefits of spinach.
This variety green dal will sure please your family I believe. Adjust your spice levels according to your taste. Broccoli Spinach dal is a perfect combo for rice or any Indian bread. Also you could make it in soup consistency and have a generous bowl of it which can actually act as protein and fibre supplement for your body.Let me know how you feel about this combo.
Takes 30 min; Serves 4

INGREDIENTS:
  1. Red Lentils/Yellow lentils/Thoor Dal – 100 gms
  2. Onion chopped -1
  3. Tomato chopped -1
  4. Spinach/Palak – 1 bunch
  5. Broccoli florets – 1 cup(or one small broccoli)
  6. Green chilli slit – 2
  7. Oil – 2 tbsp
  8. Coriander powder – 1 tbsp
  9. Red  chilli powder – 1 tbsp
  10. Cumin powder – ½ tbsp.
  11. Turmeric powder – 1/4 tbsp
  12. Salt to taste

METHOD:
Wash lentils in water well and soak it in plenty of water for minimum 30 min. This would make the lentils soft and saves us lot of time while cooking. So this trick can actually save us lot of gas.
Heat oil in a pressure cooker and sauté onions and green chillies. Add little turmeric powder and fry till the onions and little soft.

Add the broccoli and tomato and fry it with a lid on medium flame until they become little soft and leaves the raw smell. This would take a good 8 minutes. And add palak/spinach and fry for 5 more min.Add in all the spice powders and mix well. Fry for 2 minutes such the powders get coated with the vegetables, Drain the water from lentils and add to the vegetables.
Mix well and cook for 5 min.Add in 4 cups of water (lentils measured in 2 cups) and keep the flame high for 5 min. Redue the flame and close the cooker lid with whistle. Cook the dal until 3 whistles. Allow the pressure to go off and open the lid and adjust salt, If you wish you can tamper it with some mustard, garlic and curry leaves.

Tasty and healthy Broccoli Palak Dal is ready to serve!

Siri’s Notes:
  1. Use any kind of lentils as you wish and adjust the spice level according to your taste.
  2. Water and dal proportion should be 2:1.but if you need it in soup form make it 3:1
  3. Serve it along with rice, roti or even bread.
